Right off the bat it is important to note that before attempting to clean your whole house humidifier, you should absolutely read through the Owner’s Manual that came with your unit for specific instructions regarding your particular make and model.
With that out of the way, here is Galmiche & Sons’ guide to cleaning your whole house humidifier. In it, you will find a general outline on how to clean your humidifier the proper and safe way.

How to Clean Your Whole House Humidifier
1. Make sure the power switch is off! The last thing you need is an unpleasant shock while performing this maintenance. Once you are sure there is no power going to the humidifier, begin taking your whole house humidifier apart so you can access the inside for cleaning.
2. Cleaning the Water Reservoir – After your humidifier is disassembled, empty the reservoir and refill it about 2/3 of the way. In order to remove any microbes that may be living inside, add a small amount of chlorine bleach. Swirl the solution around and be sure to remove any scale buildup too.
3. Cleaning the Water Panel – In general, your whole house humidifier’s water panel should be replaced every year, or more if required. The water panel consists of the water pad, evaporator pad, and the filter. Note your whole house humidifier may allow for the cleaning of these parts (check your Owner’s Manual). If this is the case for you, place them in a tub of cold water for 20 minutes. Next, rinse the filter and wipe away any excess dirt. After this, you can replace the filter with either a new one or your freshly cleaned old filter.
4. Cleaning the Outer Body – After the heating season, you will notice that some components of your whole house humidifier may be contaminated with mineral deposits. A cloth dipped in warm water or diluted vinegar should do the trick to remove this, but for heavily contaminated components you can use a 50/50 water-vinegar solution. The best way to clean contaminated components is to simply soak them for 15-30 minutes.
5. Re-assembly – Make sure there are no drips or leaks coming from your whole house humidifier, and then re-assemble it correctly for another season of use.
