How Exactly Do HVAC Humidifiers Work?

Before we answer this question, it is important to know the difference between portable and whole-house humidifiers. Portable humidifiers are usually plugged into the wall in one room and will only adjust the humidity in that room. Whole-house humidifiers or HVAC humidifiers, on the other hand, will adjust the humidity in the entire home.

HVAC Humidifiers Improve Home Comfort

HVAC humidifiers are usually installed in the heating and cooling system and are connected to your house’s water supply. When air enters into the furnace, some of it is pushed into the HVAC humidifier where it is exposed to water vapor. The level of moisture is increased and as it exits the humidifier, it joins the rest of the airflow. Therefore, the moisture level in every room is adjusted.

HVAC humidifiers offer several benefits:

  • They help you to save on energy bills: Air that has enough moisture will feel warmer allowing you to lower your thermostat, even in winter.
  • They help reduce respiratory problems: Humid air can reduce the spread of germs and viruses and alleviate respiratory symptoms.
  • They help protect your home: When the air in your house is too dry, your hardwood floors and walls can warp or crack. Additionally, static can cause damage to electronics and other sensitive equipment.

Although HVAC humidifiers do not require much attention, regular maintenance is necessary to keep them in good working condition.

Types of HVAC Humidifiers

There are three basic types of HVAC humidifiers. However, they all work using the same principle to introduce moisture back into the air.

  • Bypass humidifier– These usually have a moisture pad where water is collected. The pad is located at a position where the airstream will move past allowing the air to mix with the evaporated moisture.
  • Fan humidifier– Just like the bypass humidifier, these have moisture pads as well. In this case, however, there is also a fan that blows air through the pad. As a result, moisture is dispersed to the airstream.
  • Steam humidifier– In this system, a steam canister is used to turn the water into steam, which is then released into the air in the system.
