- Movement-Activated Air Conditioners – While not available commercially quite yet, engineers have created a prototype for an air conditioning system that is activated based on movement. This means your air conditioner would switch on when there are people around to appreciate it, and not when nobody’s home. Imagine the energy savings with this HVAC innovation!
- Thermally Driven Air Conditioning – This is a low-cost alternative to traditional air conditioning units that uses solar energy and is supplemented by natural gas. Though it was designed in Australia, we may be seeing this new HVAC technology enter the US market in a few years.
- Ice-Powered Air Conditioning – This technology works with the use of a large tank in which water is frozen overnight. The ice produced by this method has proven to cool buildings up to 6 hours before the traditional air conditioning methods are needed to kick in and take over.

- Duel-Fuel Heat Pumps – These are a combination of an electric heat pump, and a gas furnace. Mixing the two energy sources allows for efficiency to be maximized because the system draws on each source based on the temperature the thermostat is set to and the outside air temperatures.
- Geothermal Heat Pumps – These heat pumps draw their energy directly from the earth via underground pipes that are able to absorb heat naturally and direct it into the home. They also do the reverse when the home needs cooling, by directing the heat back outside.
